Hello, Dear readers!
Today, I am absolutely thrilled to talk to you about one of the most treasured items in my home,
HONEY.
This golden elixir isn’t just a delectable treat, it’s a powerhouse of goodness with a myriad of uses that have made it an indispensable part of our daily lives.
Why Honey Holds a Special Place in My Heart:
Let’s start with some awe-inspiring facts about honey that will deepen your appreciation for this miraculous substance.
Picture this: it takes the collective effort of thousands of bees to produce a tiny amount of honey. Twelve industrious worker bees dedicate themselves to creating just a teaspoon, and it takes thirty-six bees working tirelessly for six weeks to craft a single tablespoon. Considering the bees’ short lifespan, this feat is nothing short of extraordinary.
Beyond its heavenly taste, honey boasts a remarkable nutritional profile. Bursting with vitamins such as ascorbic acid, pantothenic acid, niacin, and riboflavin, and an array of minerals including calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, and zinc.
It’s a natural treasure trove of essential nutrients that offer a multitude of benefits to the body. From bolstering the immune system and promoting healthy digestion to supporting bone health and providing an energy boost, honey’s nutritional richness makes it a true elixir for overall well-being.
However, a word of caution: always choose raw, unpasteurized honey to preserve all its nutritional benefits. And please, remember that honey is not suitable for babies under a year old due to the risk of botulism (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Botulism)
How I Use Honey in My Home:
In our household, honey isn’t just a sweet addition to our meals, it’s a key ingredient in various dishes. From my husband’s renowned “Bruess-Lee Mueslee” and his heavenly hot chocolate to our immune-boosting “Flu-be-gone-today” drink, honey lends its perfect touch of sweetness and health to our culinary creations.

Speaking of the “Flu-be-gone-today” drink, it’s a potent concoction that has worked wonders for us. Simply finely chop a handful of fresh ginger, squash and cut finely 10 garlic cloves (and let it stand for 20 minutes to aerate) and add it to 3 cups of filtered water. Simmer(don’t boil) for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, in a large mug, squeeze the juice of 4 lemons and mix in 2 tablespoon of honey. Once the simmering is done, strain the ginger and garlic tea into the mug, mix well, and drink it while still hot! Having two cups of this before bed, especially at the onset of flu symptoms, can make a significant difference and have you feeling better in the morning!
But honey’s magic doesn’t stop in the kitchen, it’s a true elixir for the skin as well. It’s a natural anti bacterial for wounds and many other things. Simply apply it to an open bleeding wound (vs using traditional bactroban or betadine). Do not plaster the wound up.
My homemade face masks, featuring honey, leave my skin glowing with health and vitality.
You can try my simple honey face mask recipe:
Apply half spoon of raw honey on a clean, dry face and neck region and leave it on for 15 minutes, then rinse off gently with water and apply your moisturizer.
Other favourite face masks of mine which include honey would absolutely be:
(1)Pigmentation remover and creating that glow mask:
Honey, about 1/2 teaspoon
Tumeric, about 1/8th of a teaspoon
Extra Virgin Olive oil, about 1/4 teaspoon
Lemon juice, about 1/4 teaspoon
Leave on the skin for 15 minutes then rinse off gently with water.
Apply your moisturiser.
(2)Extra moisturiser face mask:
Honey, about 1/2 teaspoon
Avocado, about 1 teaspoon
Extra Virgin Olive Oil, about 1/4 teaspoon
Egg yolk, a teaspoon worth (save the rest for a meal, or just add it in your hair leaving it on for 30 minutes, ensuring to wash it out two or three times)
Leave on the skin for 15 minutes then rinse off gently with water.
Apply your moisturiser.
And here’s a little bonus: honey isn’t just a culinary and skincare delight. It possesses incredible healing properties! I’ve used it for eye infections, including pink eye (although be prepared, putting a drop of honey in your eye stings for a minute but provides instant relief of the eye infection irritation). Apply it for 2 days to get rid of the eye infection. Apply it to grazes, cuts, sunburns, chapped lips, and sores.
We will be returning with a blog about garlic and olive oil.
